Some thought needs to be given before treating acne in pregnant women, or in women who plan to conceive.

Ingredients in some of the medications are thought to have harmful effects on the unborn child and for this reason should be avoided.

If Hormonal therapy is offered check to see if it includes oestrogen, flutamide or spirolactone as these are all contra-indicated in pregnancy.

Isotretinoin is to be avoided during pregnancy and also whilst breastfeeding.

If infection occurs in open pustules you may be offered oral tetracyclines commonly called doxycycline, tetracycline or minocycline these are once again contra-indicated for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Even some topical acne treatments are best avoided during pregnancy. The retinoids such as  tazarotene, adapalene or tretinoin are found in some topical creams and lotions but are not advised during pregnancy.

So, the bad news is that just about all of the acne medications should be avoided during pregnancy, whilst breastfeeding or whilst trying to conceive. The good news is that acne is a known side effect of pregnancy and it often clears of its own accord after delivery provided mum follows a healthy diet.
